Lanius Collurio is once again inspired by the natural world, borrowing the scientific name of a passerine bird. It is also the oldest theme written by the leader and featured on the record. The structure sees the alternation of two themes: the first conducted from below on the most stringent harmonic changes and the second conducted by the piano with a more open sound and an arpeggiato accompaniment.
